Huge shoutout to our RVMS staff and grounds crew for keeping our campus safe for kids in this snow! First, Lauren Morris braving the cold and snow to clear off pathways. Also, Assistant Principal, Tod Workman, who was outside with a shovel and de-icer. Yesterday, we asked Tom Pifer to create a play area for kids since it would be the warmest day of the week for kids to get to play outside, and he did just that! We appreciate their hard work and commitment to our students! ❤️

RVMS would like to give a huge shout out to Molly Butler Lodge and Irene Tilford for hosting our 6th grade reward day today. Look at those smiling faces, definitely worth working hard to better their grades this semester! Colette Myers organized the trip and the 6th grade team of Christy McGaughey, Will Rose, Will Littell, and Ms. Sunshine helped chaperone. Go Elks! ❤️
Round Valley Middle School students decided to make 1,000 cranes after learning about the inspirational meaning of the paper crane from the book, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. All students enrolled in Mrs. Morgan’s art classes during the fall semester of 2023 made a minimum of one crane to contribute to the project and were asked to aim for 10 cranes. Some students had the extra inspiration to reach our goal because they had read the biography about Sadako. Many 6th grade students recalled reading the book as an assignment in 4th grade with Mrs. Prochnow. While all the art students did participate, we had some rockstars who made many more cranes than were requested. Twenty-two students folded more than ten cranes. Alizah Ray, a sixth grade student, folded 139 cranes! Jack Slade, a fifth grade student, folded 122 cranes! Jett Finch, also in fifth grade, folded 116 cranes! Another spontaneous contest that arose during the 1,000 crane challenge is that several students took very seriously the challenge of folding the tiniest crane! Olivia Jarvis (6th grade), Coleman Pettit (5th grade), and Jett Finch (5th grade) all created a crane so tiny it looked like a speck of dust! They were so tiny that only one of these tiny cranes made it to the canvas- see if you can find it! Coleman and Aliza also made the largest crane! We hope you enjoy viewing our collaborative collage project!
More about the book: In Japanese culture, the mythical crane symbolizes eternal happiness and longevity. Overtime, people around the world have learned to recognize paper cranes as symbols of hope, long life, and community support during times of crisis. One reason people worldwide are familiar with paper cranes and what they symbolize is because of the story of a brave young girl named Sadako. If you have read the biography Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, then you are familiar with her courageous story. She was born in Japan and became seriously ill following the bombing of Hiroshima during World War II. While she was in the hospital she began folding paper cranes when her grandfather told her a wish might come true when you fold 1,000 (which legend has it is the lifespan of the crane). She made cranes from wrapping paper, medicine bottle labels, and any paper she could find. She managed to meet her goal of 1,000 cranes, however her wish to be cured did not come true. Before her death on October 25, 1955, she said, "Please treasure the life that is given to you. It is my belief that my small paper crane will enable you to understand other people's feelings, as if they are your own." Her family and friends have treasured her cranes and today they are used to commemorate world peace and hope. Because her story of hope and faith have inspired so many people, her family has seen to it that one of her original cranes have been placed on every continent in the world. Her brother even delivered one of the cranes himself to the site of the September 11 Memorial and Museum. Her hope and faith continue to inspire people.
RVMS More Beginning Sewing class also made quilts for their final projects. Great job girls!
RVMS band members, Ashlyn Haws (French Horn) and Kara Hooper (Tenor Saxophone), were chosen for All-State Band! They will perform in March in Mesa. Congratulations!

RVMS had their annual Piano recital this week showcasing ourvstudents' talents. Shoutout to Rynda Shumway for teaching them and getting our students prepared for their performance. Great job!

Come on down to the RVMS Winter Wonderland until 7:30 tonight! We have Santa, face painting, hot cocoa, a bake sale, and other fun activities! We are also doing a can food drive, so bring some cans to donate to the food bank if you can! Proceeds benefit the 8th grade for their end of year trip!
