Special
Education Referral Procedure
-
Any child aged 0-21 residing in our
school district may be referred to the Special Education
Department if it is suspected that the child may have a
learning disability. Parents, teachers, and the child
himself, or any other person with knowledge of the child
can make this referral. For a child enrolled in school,
the normal referral will come through the Child Study
Team, rather than directly from a teacher.
-
After a referral has been made, the
Special Education Director will ensure that a
multi-disciplinary educational team (MET) will be called
to discuss the referral within 60 days, and decide what,
if any testing, is needed to determine if the student is
eligible for Special Education Services.
-
For children 2.6 years to 21 years of
age, members of the MET will include parent(s), school
administrator, regular education and special education
teachers, and others with knowledge about the child.
-
For children aged 0 to 2.9 years, the
Special Education Director will refer the student to
Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP). The
Director will follow up to ensure that AzEIP has
investigated the referral with the parent and AZEIP
staff.
-
If the MET teams determine the child
eligible for services, the team will have 30 days to
develop and implement an IEP.
All Special Education Policies have been
developed in accordance with the U. S. Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Arizona Revised Statutes
and Round Valley Governing Board Policies.

Copies of State Statutes and Governing Board
policy books are available in school offices in each
building, and in the Special Education Office. The Special
Education Office also has a copy of the federal IDEA
regulations.
