Valedictorian - Salutatorian Selection Process

For the past few years it has been the practice at Round Valley High School to select multiple valedictorians.  Any student with a 4.0 GPA was given that honor.   Changes are being introduced which follow a philosophy that not all 4.0 GPA’s are the same.  One student for example might have multiple A+’s while another might have mostly A-‘s.  In addition, one student might have taken all the advanced courses that RVHS offers and received A’s in them while another might have taken an easier curriculum.  Please remember that any student with a 4.0 GPA will be considered in the top of the class and will receive the normal offers of scholarships from the state universities etc...  This is simply an internal policy change to allow us to honor the top student as valedictorian.

With this in mind, RVHS will phase in the new “weighted” policy.  All freshmen coming in to RVHS next year (2001-2002 school year) will be under the full force of the new policy.

Our present junior class (2000-2001 school year) will be under the same policy we’ve been under for the past few years.

In order to assist our current sophomore class (2000-2001 school year), we will not weight their 9th and 10th grade years.  If they end their sophomore year with a 4.0 they will all be on equal ground as they enter their junior year.  We will use the new “weighted” policy for evaluating their 11th and 12th grade courses.

Additionally, to assist our current freshman class (2000-2001 school year), we will not weight their 9th grade year.  If they end their freshman year with a 4.0 they will all be on equal ground as they enter their sophomore year.  We will use the new “weighted” policy for evaluating their 10th, 11th and 12th grade courses.

If your desire is to pursue the valedictorian honor we recommend that you carefully choose your courses according to the new weighted policy.

  • STEP 1)  To be considered as a valedictorian you must first of all have a 4.0 G.P.A.

  • STEP 2)  Any who have used a "P" (pass/fail) for a core class will be removed from consideration.

  • STEP 3)  To be considered, a student must have spent a minimum of 4 semesters at R.V.H.S.

  • STEP 4)  Eliminate any who do not meet the current requirements for being accepted into an Arizona University.  For purposes of selecting a Valedictorian or Salutatorian “deficiencies” will not be allowed.

    English  4 credits
    Fine Arts  1 credit
Foreign Language  2 credits of the same language.
Mathematics  4 credits.  (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and one more advanced math such as  Trig/Pre-Calculus or Calculus or A.P. Calculus.)
    Laboratory Science 3 credits
    Social Science 2 credits

(These standards are established by the Board of Regents and are subject to change.)

    • STEP 5)   Using the courses that a given student will use to personally meet the Arizona University requirements noted in step 3, you refigure with a new weighted G. P. A.  Accelerated English 1-4, A. P. English 1-4, Calculus, A. P. Calculus,  A. P. Chemistry,  Chemistry 2,  and Physics are the present courses that would be  on our “weighted”  list at Round Valley High School and would use the following weighted G. P. A. scale:

    •                         A+          =            5.33

    •                         A            =            5

    •                         A-           =            4.67

    •   All other classes would be weighted as follows:

    •                         A+           =            4.33

    •                         A             =            4

    •                         A-            =            3.67

    • All transfer credits (community college or correspondence) will be figured into the G. P. A. for Valedictorian or Salutatorian selection purposes.

    • STEP 6) The student with the  highest weighted score will serve as Valedictorian and the student with the 2nd highest weighted score will become the Salutatorian.

    • STEP 7) If a tie occurs at this point the "Committee" will meet to further analyze whether one should receive the honor or if indeed there is a tie.
